![]() ![]() The motor is a 1/4 horsepower induction motor. The top is machined flat, I did not notice any issues with flatness. The machining is relatively coarse compared with other power tools. I use the 3" most often because a gentle curve benefits from the largest possible diameter drum possible. This covers a great deal of your curved sanding needs. The abrasives are rather tall at 4 1/2 inches. The oscillation does reduce the effective usable height but that is not often a concern. The spindle oscillates while spinning, this action prevents the straight sanding marks that normal drum sander or belt sander can leave. The height works great for me but some may prefer it on a table height rather than bench height. The height of the unit could be a little high for some if place on your bench, from the bottom of the feet to the cast iron top it measures 12 1/4 inches. I wouldn’t want it to be much heavier or moving it around the shop would be a little difficult. I weighed mine with all the accessories at 47 pounds. Since space is limited in my shop (a unique problem among woodworkers I’m sure) I like to keep mine below my bench and take it out only when being used. When sanding aluminum, use the lightest possible pressure.If you leave plastic dust on the spindle, it can melt and ruin the abrasive when the next user sands wood. Make sure to clean all traces of plastic dust from the spindle when you are done. If the contact temperature gets hot enough to melt the plastic, solid plastic deposits will block the grit and the abrasive will be ruined. When sanding plastic, use the lightest possible pressure.Within limits (see below), plastic and aluminum can also be sanded.
